Mr. Featherby
Great Horned Owl
Great Horned Owl

Mr. Featherby is a great horned owl and can be found in forests in North, Central, and South America from Arctic tree regions south to the Strait of Magellan. They have a wingspan of over four feet and can be about two feet in height. The great horned owl has very good eyesight and excellent hearing that helps it hunt at night and may take prey 2 to 3 times heavier than it. Its loosely packed feathers make it almost silent when it flies. This makes it easier to sneak up on its prey. The great horned owl is nocturnal. It hunts small mammals like mice, rabbits, squirrels and skunks. It also eats birds such as ducks and quail.

The main characteristic of the great horned owl is its ear tufts, which are actually feathers that come to a point on the top of its head and look like horns. That is how it got its name.

A great horned owl sounds like the usual "hoot-owl".

Nocturnal - An animal that sleeps during the day and is awake through the night. They usually have big black eyes that allow them to see in the dark.
